Is technology the biggest monster we face? And our greatest friend? Can it be both? It bleeds into every aspect of my fictional world and my real one. It knows us like a best friend but can we say the same? Step into my world of narrow, winding streets where brick meets iron and steel is welded to flesh.

Posthumanism becomes more relevant every day as our society inches into a revolution where technology is more integrated than ever. There is no real answer to whether it harms or heals but what I love about science fiction and fantasy, is we get to explore those consequences time and time again.

When I fall in love with a new world, it does not matter how or where I can explore it, the more possibilities, the better. My current project, The BioChronicles, uses transmedia to unite reader and players as one audience. My world encompasses the traditional exploration of a novel, entitled Subhuman, with emerging Virtual Reality technology in a VR game entitled, Absolution.

Blending methods of storytelling through a posthuman perspective I believe will bring us closer to understanding what it really means to be human in the twenty first century.

The Future

THE BIOCHRONICLES

My current project is the immersive world of Subland: a transmedia landscape where audiences can explore stories beyond the page.

What if our world had been devastated by bio-mechanical monsters that were once our friends, neighbours, colleagues? Instead, the once grand city of Edinburgh, is now buried deep beneath itself in humanity’s effort to escape itself.

Subhuman follows part human, part machine, Kai, and Victoria, the scientist with more than a God complex. Weaving their way through the depths of Edinburgh, known as Subland, they face their own degradation, forcing them to adapt to a world of corruption and ruin, while biomechanical monsters await them.

Absolution picks up the pieces of Riley, an ex-member of the new age cult, the Neo-Oculists. They know more about the Gods than they let on. However, their knowledge comes at a cost.

SUBHUMAN
My debut is a post-apocalyptic novel of speculative cyborg fiction, set in a near future Scotland devastated by the advent of artificially intelligent prosthetics. Can mankind be saved from its own technological apocalypse or is it already too late?
ABSOLUTION
This Virtual Reality adventure game is set in the world of Subhuman, giving players a glimpse into the dystopian land that you may never want to return from.

THE WORLD
Explore the inner workings of the ruined city of Edinburgh and its darker depths below where humanity has fled to escape the hideous composites of flesh and machine.

THE PAST

Editorial

The editorial opportunities I have been involved with have shaped my writing both creatively and professionally. The highlight of these was my time with Edinburgh Festivals Magazine as Editor and reviewer. Fully immersed into the world of Europe’s largest festival, I saw Edinburgh in a different guise.

No longer the dark, haunted city I knew, instead it became a hub of life and activity. People huddled beneath arches, and the depths of Edinburgh rose from the dead spaces they had become, replaced with laughter and echoing chatter. Kept busy by attending, reviewing, scheduling, editing and uploading, I experienced the Fringe at its height and took a deep breath of the culture and talent that was on offer from every corner of the world all packed into my home city.

Gaming

From traversing the deserts of Mad Max: Fury Road, to the underwater dystopia of Bioshock, gaming presents endless possibilities for world building and character development. They are brought to life through visuals, sound, and most importantly, story.

Becoming further involved in the development of games using new technologies such as Virtual Reality, the potential for narrative driven games is huge in this medium. It is those stories that keep us invested and I continue to seek opportunities to be part of that gap. Whether is is copywriting for DogStar VR Lounge, or narrative design for Mogworks Studios, story is at the heart of what I do.
