Do You See It, Too?

Mud, soft under my feet as I wade through tree and branch, sharp and tugging on my coat, already soaked through.
Cold to the bone, I’ve been out here too long. Hours maybe. Seeking, searching, sinking deeper into forest of leaf and shadow. And mud.
Isolated but not alone.
TOGETHER BUT NOT FRIENDS.
THEY’RE WATCHING ME. OVER THERE, BEYOND THE CRACKED TRUNKS. THE TANGLED STINGING WEEDS, THROUGH THE WEEPING WIND THEY WAIT FOR ME.
TALL SHADOWS. EACH ONE CUTTING THROUGH ME LIKE THE SPLINTERS ON MY SKIN FROM CLAWING AT THEM, FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL, FOR MY LIFE.
BUT THEY WILL COME FOR YOU AND FOR ME. LOOK UP.
THEY’RE ALREADY WAITING. ON THE EDGE OF YOUR VISION, DO YOU SEE IT, TOO?
