Edinburgh

A decade of pollution from Junkies and a new breed of machine emerging into the city has rendered the surface air toxic. Black smoke joins this corruption from fires that have been raging for years, clouding what little light the sun provides. The city of Edinburgh and its surrounding area is now a condemned ruin, blackened buildings and abandoned vehicles are the only reminders of a time when people roamed freely. Junkies and machines prowl the decaying city, preying on any survivors who scavenge to live. Once, not so long ago, sounds of battle blanketed landscape were prevalent, but more recently, Edinburgh is eerily quiet: a corpse slowly decaying as more survivors choose to flee and start anew in the tunnels below.

What Happened?

  • Prosthetic trials take place on first batch of patients.
  • No results on early prosthetics are published but they are rolled out for mass testing. public interest increases upon witnessing the enhancements of those with prosthetics.
  • prosthetics become readily available to those who require one. increased demand among those who do not and private sectors begin to acquire them to sell to the rich.
  • reports emerge of weird side effects among prosthetic patients but they are ignored. the technology is abused by those with money who use it to alter their appearance and enhance themselves.
  • side effects increase, with some stories of people losing their minds completely. still, the demand for both internal and external prosthetics grows.
  • links between prosthesis and the complete breakdown in a patient’s humanity become evident. panic begins but the government and military attempt to control it.
  • social and economic infrastructure fails. order fails. control fails. edinburgh is first, but it spreads quicker than any town or city can contain it. anyone with a prosthetic loses their mind to metal, leaving fighting forces diminished.
  • some manage to bypass the virus within the implants that control their prosthetics, saving them from themselves. the rest call them subhumans. no one trusts them, everyone is afraid.
  • those left in edinburgh escape into the bones of the underground city in hopes of starting a new life away from the monsters above.
